Manage Your Investments Like a Business

One of the most important lessons I’ve learnt from Warren Buffett was to manage my investments like a business. While most people buy stocks like buying 4D or TOTO, they are trading (buying and selling) based on short term predictions if the price will go up or down. In fact, most of these ‘punters’ or ‘gamblers’ know very little about the business operations behind the stock they own.

Failure Is NOT the Mother Of All Success

Just last week, right after my session at HOT ON TWO, when I was featured with Ernie Chen at TV2 sharing on 3 Wealth Creation Strategies for Investors, the host of the program asked me a question. It was a frequently asked question (FAQ) which was given by most the participants of my seminars and workshops as well, “You look young. How old are you really?”

As usual, after answering, I’ll receive the same state-of-shock look on the face. These are the common remarks that most people will make:
“You gotta be pulling my leg!”
“You must be kidding me!”
“Come on, Tell me the truth!”

Lessons learnt in FIFA World Cup 2010

1. USE TECHNOLOGY
Frank Lampard’s goal was ruled out because that referee is blind! If that goal was counted, Germany might not have been so superior to England after all as they were heavily depending on their discipline counter attacks.

With the help of technology, we Asians now have the accessibility to invest in investments such as shares or real estates in other continents which are highly attractive in value due to the US Financial Crisis & European Debt Crisis. E.g, We have facebook to connect to real estate agents in US and Google Earth to view our properties in US. Are you capitalizing on the power of technology when managing your wealth?

Wealth Intelligence: Why You Must Stop Being Mr. Professor & Start Learning How to ‘SWIM’

There was once a professor who wanted to cross a river and he approached a local boatman who agreed to row him downstream for a $50.

As they made their way down the river, the professor decides to show off his intelligence and high education so he started to test the simple boatman.

Picking up a leaf, the professor arrogantly asks the boatman, “Have you studied Botany?” The boatman looks at him blankly and replies, “No.. I’m just a boatman, Sir. I don’t even understand what the word meant.”

Then I’m afraid 25% of your life is gone!” the professor loftily says. The boatman feels really bad about his ignorance but continues to row on.

As they move further downstream, the river currents begin to get stronger and stronger. The professor picks up a stone dropped on the boat and asks, “Boatman, have you ever studied Geology?” The confused poor boatman again says, “No….”

The professor shakes his head and says, “Then 50% of your life is gone!” He then signals him to carry on rowing. As they move further downstream, the currents get even stronger, the water is moving faster and the boat begins to sway violently.

“When life knocks you down, you can choose to get back up”

I was lucky enough to take 2 hours off my time to catch the Karate Kid last week. Karate Kid is a story of a 12 year old Kid, Dre Parker or Little Dre (Jaden Smith) who had to leave for China because his mother’s latest career move has landed him in China. Despite hating everything in China, Dre had something to live for, his classmate Mei Ying. However, due to cultural differences, the friendship was made almost impossible. Worst still, Dre’s feelings make an enemy of the class bullly, Cheng. Cheng is very good at kung fu and often bullied Dre. Dre soon found a master, Mr Han (Jackie Chan), his apartment’s maintenance man. Han soon teaches Dre that kung fu is not about punches and parries, but maturity and clam.

Big Rocks First

There was once a professor who brought out several rocks of different shapes and sizes and placed them in front his students. He placed them randomly into a jar. When no more rocks could fit, he held it up to his students and asked, “Is the jar full?” The students answered, “Yes it is!” The professor then said, “This jar represents your typical week. The rocks represent the various activities in your week.”

What he did next was fascinating. The professor emptied out the jar he had filled and began re-filling it with just the big rocks. He then put the medium sized rocks in and next reach out for the small ones which filled all remaining spaces between the big and medium sized rocks. Now do you think this jar can accommodate more rocks compared to the previous jar?

So, what is the truth of this illustration?
